-
Conducting NRA Basic Courses in accordance with policies

Upholding the quality and integrity of national firearm
safety and training standards established by NRA
-
Promoting firearm safety and the shooting sports
-
Reporting training data to NRA
Knowing how to shoot is an important requirement for NRA
instructors, but you will also need to know how to teach others to shoot. NRA
Instructor Training Courses help you develop the additional knowledge, skills
and techniques needed to organize and teach courses in the NRA Basic Firearm
Training Program.
Instructor training courses are conducted by NRA Training
Counselors. Training Counselors are active and experienced instructors who have
been appointed by NRA to train other (new) instructors. You may request a list
of training counselors in your geographic area by contacting the NRA Training
Department at 703-267-1430.
How you benefit by becoming
an NRA Instructor:
-
NRA Certified Instructors qualify to take the NRA Basic
Range Safety Officer Course as a validation course. The Basic Range Safety
Officer validation course is offered and taken as part of the Home Study
Program.
-
You will soon qualify to become a Training Counselor. In
this position, you have the responsibility of teaching (new) NRA
Instructors.
-
Once you receive your certificate (suitable for framing)
from NRA, you will receive your identification card. You will also receive a
free subscription of the NRA Shooting Education Update, a newsletter
published periodically for all NRA Trainers.
-
Program information, training schedules, book reviews,
material updates and more are provided. Additionally, the Update provides an
open forum for the exchange of information and ideas on firearm safety and
marksmanship education.
-
You become an even more valuable resource for your
community. NRA Certified Instructors are leaders who provide a very
important service. Because of your dedication to the shooting sports, you
are providing a chance for others to enjoy the same benefits of firearm
ownership that you have enjoyed in the past.

Class Size Minimum and
Maximum
Many of our courses require intensive and extensive range sessions with
instructor to student ratios of between 1-to-4 and 1-to2 on the line. In
some cases, we have an instructor-to-student ratio nearing or set to
1-to-1 in order to maximize the learning and safety results. Likewise,
there are courses where the necessary classroom dynamic requires a
minimum number of students for the required interactive sessions. For
example, there are roleplay sessions in our instructor courses whereby
instructor candidates take turns "teaching" each other through some of
the material in order to become comfortable with the process and
delivery. Thus, if listed on the above schedule, certain courses may
have these minimum and or maximum student parameters. In the event that
a given class does not have enough registered students to meet the
minimum shown, the class will be rescheduled. This will be communicated
approximately one week prior to the class date. If you are planning to
fly in for the class, please contact us to discuss your situation and to
learn of our current registration status. If a class is rescheduled, you
may opt for a refund to to have your prepaid amount carried forward to
the next class or another course. |

CCW Course Prerequisite
Prior handgun shooting experience which may be from formal OR informal
training. Student MUST know basic handgun safety including how to load,
cock (if applicable), fire, de-cock/un-cock (if applicable) and unload
their handgun. One basic measure is whether the student feels
comfortable going to a range and shooting by themselves prior to
enrolling in this course. If not, we suggest first taking our NRA First
Steps Pistol orientation or NRA Basic Pistol course. If necessary,
unprepared students will be transferred to the next available course for
beginners and/or a range session may be required (additional fee).
|
| |
CCW Live-Fire (LF) Session
Live-fire is specifically required by the
KSAG's office. Please call 913-538-5601 to reserve a spot in a range
session after you have completed our CCW course. This range session can
be taken prior to the CCW course. Fee includes instructor, range time
and targets only. Students bring their pistol and 100 rounds of target
type ammunition. Reservations are
required. |
| |
NRA First Steps Pistol & NRA Basic Pistol Prerequisite:
Positive attitude towards firearms and a desire to learn! NRA First
Steps Pistol Orientation is essentially a subset of the NRA Basic Pistol
Course with a focus on learning to shoot one specific handgun from a
standing, two-handed position whereas NRA Basic Pistol gives the student
an opportunity to experience different basic shooting positions, other
handguns, etc. The NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation is just that, an
orientation, and it is not a "course" to be used to satisfy the training
requirements for a CCW permit. |
| |
NRA Personal Protection IN The Home (PPITH) Course
Prerequisite
NRA Basic Pistol Course or NRA First Steps Pistol
Orientation or current CCW permit or
other acceptable pistol qualification card/marksmanship program
or DD-214 showing pistol qualification or
permission of instructor and pass written and shooting
skills test ($50). |
| |
NRA Personal Protection OUTSIDE The Home (PPOTH) Course
Prerequisite
Satisfactory completion of the NRA Personal Protection IN
the Home Course OR permission of instructor AND
pass written test AND pass shooting skills test ($75
fee). Students may opt to complete only the basic portion of the PPOTH
course which includes about 3 hours of range work with classroom
sessions on Friday evening and Saturday. Tuition for the basic portion
only, which is about 10 hours, is $295. |
| |
NRA Instructor Course Prerequisite
Please call for more information. If you have not completed the NRA
Trainer Guide Course within the last 12 months, you must take the NRA
Instructor Trainer Guide Course in addition to one or more NRA
Instructor Courses in the discipline of your choice (pistol, rifle,
etc.). |
| |
NRA PPOTH Instructor Course Prerequisite
NRA Personal Protection OUTSIDE The Home student-level course
AND certification as NRA Pistol and NRA Personal
Protection IN The Home Instructor. Student may complete all of these
courses in sequence before this course. If you have not completed the
NRA Trainer Guide Course within the last 12 months, you must take the
NRA Instructor Trainer Guide Course in addition to one or more NRA
Instructor Courses in the discipline of your choice (pistol, rifle,
etc.). |
